For Malaysians, Penang is largely associated with delicious food and historic buildings that never cease to wonder locals and tourists alike.
The state, which is also popularly known as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’, has once again added another feather to its cap after it was named as one of the must-visit places in Southeast Asia by travel guide Lonely Planet.
Penang featured on ‘Best 7 destinations in Southeast Asia’ list
In an article titled ‘7 of the Best Places to Visit in Southeast Asia’, Lonely Planet praised Penang for exuding a historic and multicultural charm, which is best shown through its food, architecture and traditions.

The capital of this tropical island, George Town, manages to transform its heritage into something that can accommodate tourists while tastefully maintaining its authenticity.
“In just one city, you can tour Chinese clan houses, mosques, Hindu temples and British Colonial buildings.
“Outside of George Town, Penang National Park is home to beautiful beaches and hiking trails through the jungle. Learn more about local fauna at the Tropical Spice Garden, packed with spices, medicinal plants and deadly natural poisons – guided tours are available,” it wrote.

Following the publication of the article, State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai took to Facebook to congratulate the state for its latest achievement.
