Out of all the states in Malaysia, Penang has long built its reputation as the go-to destination for food and sightseeing thanks to its wide variety of mouthwatering dishes and well-preserved historical buildings.
Once again, the state was brought into the international limelight after travel guidebook publisher Lonely Planet recently named it as the 2nd best place in the whole of Southeast Asia for solo travel.
Lonely Planet names Penang 2nd best place for solo travel
According to an article published by Lonely Planet on Jul 12, it wrote that while Southeast Asia is “one of the smaller subregions in the world”, it still offers diverse cultures and vivid landscapes.
Lonely Planet then revealed that the list was based on its three “cornerstones to successful solo travel – reliable wi-fi, ease of communication, and accessible transportation.
In its description of Penang, the travel guidebook publisher wrote that the city is best known for its “vibrant street food and creative local culture”.
(Penang Island) is a treasure trove of decorated pre-war shophouses and clanhouses intermixed with cute cafes and a street art scene that adds whimsy to the sleepy city.
It also highlighted the state’s longstanding reputation for its food, where it listed New Lane, Lebuh Kimberly and Lebuh Chulia as some of the best places for tourists to enjoy cheap eats from as low as RM10.
Lonely Planet also praised Penang for being a “melting pot of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Peranakan influences”, citing the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion as an example.
