Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, have climbed to a career-best world No. 2 in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings.
Their rise comes after a strong semi-final finish at the China Open in Changzhou last week, which allowed them to leapfrog Japan’s Chiharu Shida and Nami Matsuyama.
This marks Malaysia’s highest women’s doubles ranking since 2009, when national legends Chin Eei Hui and Wong Pei Tty reached world No. 1, but even they never managed a World Championships medal.
Perfect timing ahead of Paris
Their ranking boost couldn’t have come at a better time, as it is set to earn them the second seeding at the upcoming World Championships in Paris (Aug 25–31).
With a favourable draw, the pair will have a golden opportunity to fight for Malaysia’s first-ever women’s doubles podium finish at the world meet.
Pearly-Thinaah remain about 22,000 points behind China’s top pair Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning. To catch up, they’ll need to start turning deep runs into titles.
But with their current form and growing confidence, Pearly-Thinaah are proving they’re more than just contenders — they’re history-makers in the making.
