M’sian Pair Pearly-Thinaah Upset World No.2 Japanese Duo To Reach Japan Open 2025 Final

Pearly & Thinaah stun Japan’s duo 21-13, 21-11 — only their 2nd win in 15 meetings.
Malaysia’s top women’s doubles duo, Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan, are heading to the final of the Daihatsu Japan Open 2025 — and they did it in style.

The World No. 3 pair shocked Japan’s Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida (World No. 2) in the semifinals with a dominant 21-13, 21-11 win on July 19.

Revenge after 13 painful losses

Coming into this match, the odds weren’t in Malaysia’s favour.

Out of 14 previous meetings, Pearly and Thinaah had only beaten the Japanese pair once, holding a tough 1–13 head-to-head record before this match.

But in just 36 minutes, they turned the tables.

With this victory, they now stand at 2–13 in their head-to-head encounters.

To reach the semifinals of the Daihatsu Japan Open 2025, Malaysia’s Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan defeated South Korea’s Jeong Na Eun and Lee Yu Lim in the quarterfinals.
