If your child is turning 12 soon, there’s one important thing parents shouldn’t overlook, applying for their MyKad.
The process is now more convenient as applications can be done online, but there are still several key requirements and timelines to take note of.
MyKad at 12: Your child’s first official ID

At the age of 12, Malaysian children are required to apply for their MyKad, which serves as their first official identification document.
This card will be used for various purposes later on, including school matters and other official processes.
Application can now be done online
Parents and guardians can now submit the application through the official JPN portal:
https://web12tahun.jpn.gov.my/
This makes the process more accessible without needing to queue at physical counters.
Fees depend on when you apply

The cost of applying depends on how early the application is submitted:
- Free: If applied within 30 days after the child turns 12
- RM10: If applied after 30 days but before the age of 16
This means applying early can help parents avoid unnecessary charges.
Requirements parents should prepare
Before applying, make sure these conditions are met:
- The applicant must be a Malaysian citizen aged 12 to below 16 years old
- The child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, including:
- Mother or father
- Legal guardian such as grandparents, aunt/uncle, or siblings aged 21 and above
- The application should be made within 30 days after turning 12
- If the accompanying person falls outside the listed categories, additional documents are required, including:
- Statutory declaration
- Confirmation letter from the Social Welfare Department (JKM)
Apply early to avoid extra steps
To ensure a smooth process, parents are encouraged to apply as soon as their child turns 12.
Besides avoiding the RM10 fee, applying early also ensures your child has a valid identification document ready for future needs.
