‘Not all BMW drivers are like that’

Writing in Malay and Chinese, Kiang said he wanted to apologise as “an unofficial representative of normal BMW drivers”, adding that not all BMW drivers behave recklessly on the road.

To the family of the Vios victims, my deepest condolences and sympathy,” he wrote.

He said most BMW drivers, like many other road users, simply use their cars to go to work, return home, bring their wives or girlfriends shopping, and “race with their own car loans only”.

Kiang also said the person involved should be held responsible for his own actions, adding that he hoped the driver’s licence would be suspended for life.

“As a legal practitioner, I hope the victims’ family will receive justice,” he added.

‘Roads are not race tracks’

In a separate post, Kiang shared that he also drives a BMW 5 Series, but stressed that owning a powerful car does not mean one should drive dangerously.

He said he normally does not exceed 50km/h on the Simpang Renggam road, describing it as a kampung road with poor conditions.

Are you racing with your brother there? Are you crazy?” he wrote, referring to the crash.

He also pointed out that five people were killed in the incident, including a young child.

Kiang added that drivers who want to “test power” should do so at proper circuits such as Sepang, not on public roads used by families and elderly people.

He ended his post by reminding drivers that the road is not a race track, and that driving is not only about being responsible for oneself, but also for the lives of others.

What happened

The crash happened at around 1.15pm on June 1 at KM27 of Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam in Kluang, Johor.

According to police, the accident involved five vehicles and resulted in five deaths.

The crash was believed to have involved a BMW 530e driven by a 22-year-old man and a Mercedes-Benz A250 driven by his 19-year-old younger brother.

The BMW reportedly lost control, entered the opposite lane, and collided with several vehicles, including a Toyota Vios, Perodua Alza, Proton Wira and another Mercedes-Benz.

The BMW driver later died while being taken to hospital.

Four people in the Toyota Vios were also killed at the scene: a 36-year-old man, his 33-year-old wife, a 73-year-old woman, and a 10-year-old girl.

19yo driver arrested

Police later arrested the 19-year-old Mercedes-Benz driver to assist in investigations.

His urine test reportedly came back negative for drugs, and the vehicle was seized as part of the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Sections 41(1) and 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless driving and under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
