Pangkalan Data Utama (PADU) was recently introduced by the government in order to ensure subsidies are given to deserving Malaysians. However, registration rates have remained low even as the Mar 31 deadline draws near.
Following this, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli made a video explaining the various benefits of PADU and emphasized the potential loss of government relief for those who do not apply, which has since attracted much backlash.
Rafizi urges M’sians to register for PADU
In the video posted to his X account on Mar 18, Rafizi expressed his concern about Malaysians risking exclusion from government aid by not registering before the deadline.
With only 13 days remaining until the closure of PADU registration and updates, it’s crucial to act swiftly. After March 31, the government will rely solely on the updated database from government departments for various programs, including the adjustment of subsidies.
“If you fail to update your data before March 31, your eligibility for government programs and assistance will be determined based on the existing data in the government database,” he said in the clip.
He also added that those who skip out on registering for PADU will have it “served as a lesson now” and that “regretting it later will be pointless”.
‘Are you threatening us?’
Unfortunately, Rafizi’s attempt to convince Malaysians into registering for PADU seem to have backfired spectacularly as netizens condemned him for his condescending tone in the clip.
‘This seems like threatening the people. ‘If you guys don’t register, then you all know what will happen after.’ Why do you need to threaten people? Aren’t we the ones who chose you?’
‘If we don’t register, what happens? Will our citizenship be taken away?’
Others also pointed out that they have tried registering for PADU but have encountered numerous problems in doing so due to technical glitches.
