Meeting a VIP can already be nerve-wracking but imagine having things go wrong before the meeting even begins.
That was exactly what happened to one Malaysian man, whose lunch appointment at Mid Valley took an unexpected turn after a sudden mishap involving his drink… before the situation turned into something he probably didn’t see coming.
Drink suddenly “explodes” before VIP arrives
In a viral Threads post by @shafiqshahar, the man, known as Shafiq, shared how he was invited by a Datuk for a lunch meeting at Oriental Kopi in Mid Valley.
After arriving at the café and waiting for a table, he ordered a simple drink, mineral water while waiting for the VIP to show up.
While waiting for the Datuk, I ordered mineral water. The waiter quickly served it with a mug filled with ice, so I poured the water in,” he wrote.
However, things quickly took a turn when the mug unexpectedly “exploded” just as he was about to drink, causing water to spill all over his pants.
Left stunned as VIP witnesses incident
Shocked by what had just happened, Shafiq immediately called the waiter to question the situation.
I asked the waiter, ‘What’s going on? Is this some kind of prank TV show?’ The waiter also looked panicked,” he said.
At that moment, the Datuk he was supposed to meet had just arrived and witnessed the incident, before making a phone call to someone Shafiq did not recognise.
Staff steps in within minutes
Not long after, a Person-In-Charge (PIC) approached Shafiq and offered to replace his soaked pants.
After about five minutes, a PIC came to me and said they wanted to treat me to a new pair of pants. I felt paiseh since it was just mineral water, but rezeki jangan ditolak,” he shared.
He then followed the staff to Uniqlo to pick out a new pair.
Gets free meal and gift on top of it
But the good service didn’t stop there.
Aside from receiving a brand new pair of pants, Shafiq also didn’t have to pay for his meal, as the café gave him a full 100% discount. He was even given a complimentary gift.
Amused by how things turned out, he joked that it felt like he ended up “treating” the Datuk instead.
Praises café for going the extra mile
Impressed by how the situation was handled, Shafiq praised the café’s service, calling it one of the best he has experienced.
“Service and treatment were top-notch. Hopefully next time I come, I can still get 100% discount,” he joked.
