Every year, malls across Malaysia will engage in a ‘competition’ to see who can come up with the biggest and best-looking festive decoration.
One such mall recently left Malaysians scratching their heads after a photo of its Raya decor went viral on social media, where they wondered what the structure was trying to depict.
What the photo showed
According to a photo shared to X (formerly Twitter) by @SMQotaddah, it showed a giant structure erected near Suria KLCC in conjunction with Ramadan and the upcoming Raya festival.
As seen from the photo, the structure consisted of three tiers, where the base was surrounded by a circle of wooden lamps, while the second layer had a dome-shaped cover and was decorated with different Raya-themed motifs.
At the very top, it featured an oval-shaped structure, seemingly meant to mimic the shape of a candle flame.
M’sians confused by bizarre Raya decor
However, it seemed that the structure wasn’t exactly executed according to plan as Malaysians were confused over what it was actually supposed to represent.
One wrote: ‘Lol what even is this?’, to which the OP replied, ‘It’s a joke, that’s what it is.’ Ouch.
Another commented: ‘What is this, a space ship launching tower? Doesn’t look like one.’
One netizen pointed out that KLCC most likely was trying to replicate the pelita (oil lamp) but fell short on the execution.
Another wrote that the confusing decor was just proof that KLCC’s management was more than happy to come up with subpar work and came up with the decor just for the sake of it.
