A group of youths were left speechless after a woman allegedly kicked a kitten they were feeding at an R&R, sending it flying across the area.
Both one of the youths and a man who witnessed the incident later shared their accounts on Threads, offering two perspectives on what happened.
Youth initially thought woman was upset about the mess
Threads user @syhirahmn said she and her friends were feeding a mother cat and several kittens when the woman approached them.
At first, Syahirah assumed the woman was upset because the cat food had made the area messy. She reportedly told the woman that she would clean up after the cats finished eating.
However, the woman allegedly repeatedly questioned why they were feeding the animals.
What is the benefit of feeding cats?” the woman allegedly asked.
Syahirah replied that feeding hungry animals was a good deed.
According to her, the woman suddenly became angry and kicked one of the kittens, sending it flying.
Syahirah said the incident happened so quickly that she, her friends and her boyfriend were too shocked to react.
We stayed silent because we were shocked. She kicked the kitten so quickly that we could not process what had happened,” she wrote.
Man witnessed incident while waiting for his child
Another Threads user, @mdaudyusof, known as Muhammad Daud, said he witnessed the incident while stopping at the R&R during a journey from Tangkak to Rompin.
He was waiting for his child to finish an errand when he noticed the woman walking quickly through the area, seemingly looking for the toilet.
After finishing his own business and preparing to return to his car, the woman allegedly approached him and asked why the youths were feeding the cats.
He replied that the cats were being fed because they were hungry.
Shortly afterwards, he allegedly saw the woman walk towards the group and kick the kittens, causing one of them to be thrown several metres away.
What is the point of feeding cats? Why waste your salary buying cat food?” the woman allegedly told the youths.
The man said the group appeared stunned and did not know how to respond.
Man stepped in to confront her
After seeing what happened, he immediately confronted the woman and told her that she could not treat the kittens that way.
According to him, the woman then walked away while allegedly saying:
“Then who is going to replace the rice I lost?”
He said he was confused by the remark and could not understand how it was connected to the youths feeding the cats.
The woman later walked towards her car and passed close to his child. He said he was relieved that she did not touch or confront the child.
Syahirah said she initially thought the man was related to the woman, but later realised he was a stranger who had simply chosen to step in.
“Thank you for speaking on our behalf,” she wrote.
‘If she wanted food, I would have given it to her’
Syahirah said the woman allegedly remarked that the youths should have given her food instead of feeding the cats.
She stressed that she would have willingly offered the woman food or money if she had asked.
If she wanted money, I would have given her some, but she should not have kicked the cat,” she wrote.
After the woman left, Syahirah picked up and comforted the kitten before placing it back near the food.
She said the frightened kitten fortunately landed on the ground instead of striking a nearby stone bench.
Despite the ordeal, the kitten later continued eating.
Photos shared by Syahirah showed it standing near scattered cat food, while the other cats had reportedly run away after being startled.
It is okay if you do not want to feed them, but please do not abuse them,” she wrote.
The incident has since drawn widespread criticism online, with many netizens saying that spending money to feed hungry animals should be viewed as compassion rather than a waste.
Kitten confirmed safe and active
In a later update, Syahirah said she returned to the R&R before travelling back to Johor to check on the cats.
She confirmed that all of them were safe, including the kitten that had allegedly been kicked.
The kitten is happy and active. It was running around and climbing trees,” she wrote.
Syahirah also fed the cats again before leaving.
Witness says woman showed no remorse after being confronted
Speaking to WeirdKaya, the man who confronted the woman said she did not explain what she meant when she mentioned her “missing rice”.
“She didn’t explain anything. She immediately walked towards her car,” he said.
According to him, the woman appeared surprised that someone had raised their voice at her.
He added that the youths had been listening to the woman throughout the exchange, and claimed she kicked the kitten after one of them responded to her.
The witness said the woman neither apologised nor showed any remorse after being confronted.
Wanted to lodge a report but had to rush home
He said he was unsure whether anyone later reported the incident to the R&R management, police or Department of Veterinary Services.
Although he personally wanted to lodge a report, he had to rush back to Rompin to help manage his younger sibling’s wedding ceremony.
Hopes animal cruelty will be stopped
The witness said he hoped the incident would remind the public that cruelty towards animals must be stopped.
He also called for clearer guidelines when members of the public feed stray animals, such as providing designated areas and suitable containers so the animals can eat and drink safely without dirtying public spaces.
He urged anyone who witnesses animal abuse not to simply ignore it.
“If we are unable to stop it through our actions, we should at least speak up. At the very least, we should reject the cruelty in our hearts,” he said.
He hoped the confrontation would prompt the woman to reflect on her actions and repent.
