Economy rice, or ‘chap fan’, is one of the most popular and recognisable meals in Malaysia, where an array of dishes is laid out for customers to choose from.
While customers have absolute freedom over what they eat, the price is often determined by dishes chosen and its amount, which can sometimes lead to prices that some may find exorbitant.
M’sian woman complains over RM24 economy rice
A woman recently took to Facebook to complain about how she was charged RM24 for a meal of economy rice at a restaurant in Johor Bahru.
In a photo shared by her, it showed that she had chosen three dishes — stink beans, stingray, and sayur mani.
However, when she heard that the price for the meal was RM24, it left her stunned and bewildered.
RM24 economy rice. I thought I heard the pricing wrongly and had to confirm it again. I’m sorry…my poverty has clearly limited my imagination.
The woman also sarcastically asked for forgiveness for her ignorance over how fish could be this expensive.
“Please forgive me for being a ‘suagu’ (Hokkien for ‘ignorant person’) as I consume fish without knowing how much it costs,” she wrote.
Netizens: ‘Did you not see the pricing?’
In the comment section, netizens were largely unsympathetic with the OP’s rant and chided her for complaining over her meal.
One wrote: ‘Such a huge menu on the wall. Are you blind?’
Another wrote: ‘Stingray isn’t cheap. If you take these dishes, you need to be prepared. It’s impossible to eat stingray but be charged the price of a mackerel.’
On the other hand, one lamented that economy rice was no longer ‘economic’ as the name suggests.
