M’sian Uncle Turns Aggressive After Patrons Tell Him Not To Smoke At Kopitiam

Hello KKM.
Since 2020, smoking at eateries has been banned all throughout Malaysia, but there are still some who blatantly disregard the law and do as they wish.

Recently, a video showing an uncle becoming aggressive has gone viral online after he was told not to smoke at a kopitiam.

Taking to Facebook to share the encounter, the OP known as YK wrote that the uncle was smoking near the table where she and her family were seated.

At that time, I was with my child and older family members, and my child was coughing and feeling unwell.

“When my father politely told the uncle not to smoke, he became angry and began hurling vulgarities at us, saying the kopitiam doesn’t belong to us and that no one has the right to tell him what to do,” she wrote.

YK also claimed that the uncle tried to throw a chair at her father but was stopped by her younger brother.

Speaking to WeirdKaya, YK said she and her family left after the confrontation as they didn’t want to cause any trouble.

“While I mean no harm to the uncle, I just wanted to let him know the importance of respecting children, the elderly, and non-smokers.”

Usually when someone smokes, we will advise them and they will voluntarily go outside to smoke, although some do so unwillingly.

“But this uncle couldn’t be reasoned with and he refused to listen to the restaurant owner, who told him to go outside,” she said.

Wants to remind public

YK also told WeirdKaya that her intention in sharing the video was to tell smokers to respect non-smokers and hopes that the government will focus more on enforcing the indoor smoking ban.

This video has also sparked a discussion among netizens, where many were conflicted in their views about the incident.

Others have also urged YK or the restaurant owner to lodge a report with the Ministry of Health.
