M’sian Tourist Who Allegedly Mocked Chinese Citizens In Viral Clip Is Now Suing For Defamation

Incoming lawsuit.
On Tuesday (June 16), we wrote about a group of Malaysians vacationing in China triggering widespread anger online after several clips showed them mocking the locals’ body odour.

Now, one of them, who posted said videos but has since made her account private, is biting back at critics by announcing she has initiated legal proceedings for defamation.

What happened

For those unaware of what transpired, it all began with a video on Threads showing the tourists waiting to board a bus.

In the midst of waiting, one of them covered her nose and allegedly complained loudly about the smell around her, yelling: “It smells so bad! Did none of you shower?”

The disparaging remarks weren’t just limited to those in queue only, as the tourists also made similar remarks about an e-hailing driver.

Unsurprisingly, the clips caused an uproar among netizens, who slammed the group for being disrespectful and tarnishing Malaysia’s image abroad.

Lawsuit

In an unexpected twist, one of the tourists released an official statement on social media, where she revealed she’s in the midst of suing certain individuals for defamation, reported China Press.

The statement read:

“I’d like to inform the public that I have taken legal action against any parties who have made defamatory statements, baseless accusations, provocative remarks, or spread false information that has tarnished my good name, reputation, and integrity.

“I’ve handed it over to the relevant authorities and my legal counsel for further action through appropriate legal channels. Therefore, I advise all parties to cease any speculation, defamation, or sharing of unverified information related to this issue.

“Legal proceedings have already been initiated, and all related matters will be handled by my lawyer. Any party that continues to spread defamatory or false information may face legal action.”

However, the move didn’t win much favour from netizens, who were even more riled up by the fact that the woman was taking legal action.
