“Is This Normal?” — M’sian Stunned By Meagre Amount In His Iceless McCafé Drink

He paid RM5.66 for the drink.
Ever heard of the term “shrinkflation”? Simply put, it’s a combination of the words “shrink” and “inflation”, where it refers to the phenomenon of things getting more expensive and smaller in quantity.

One man got to experience this firsthand for himself after he purchased an iceless drink from McCafé, which left him stunned over its contents.

Iceless McCafé drink had less than half the amount

In a tweet by Harry yesterday (Apr 12), he posted a photo of a cup of iced chocolate (minus the ice and whipped cream) that he had ordered from a McCafé outlet in Perak.

To his shock, the drink’s content was less than half of the cup’s size, a far cry from what was advertised on the restaurant’s menu.

According to the receipt, Harry paid RM5.66 for the iceless drink, which would normally be considered expensive given its amount.

Not knowing whether it was common practice or simply a scam, Harry reached out to netizens for their opinion on the matter.

I got a question. Is it normal to get this amount if you order iceless drinks?

Netizens offer their views

The tweet, which has been viewed over 257,000 times, saw a range of reactions from netizens about the drink.

Many said that this was a common practice among beverage chains such as Starbucks and Zus Coffee, where there was a certain measurement for iceless drinks and that customers might have to pay more if they wanted a full cup.

Another commented that Harry was probably better off spending his money on a cup of teh tarik at the mamak instead of McCafé.

Speaking to WeirdKaya, Harry said that he bought the iceless Iced Chocolate at a McDonald’s outlet in Ipoh as part of his sahur preparations for the next day.

He added that he was surprised to receive such a small amount based on his past experiences in ordering iceless drinks, where he would be given a full cup.

When I made the order, they had run out of Milo and offered me Iced Chocolate as an alternative, which I accepted based on the assumption that I’d be given a full cup as what I’ve experienced before.

“Upon receiving the drink, I was shocked but didn’t have the opportunity to clarify with the workers,” he said.

Despite this unfortunate incident, Harry said it hasn’t deterred him from ordering drinks from McCafé in the future.

A bazaar stall caught the attention of many after a man complained of being charged an extra RM3 for less ice in his drink:
