For many students, scoring straight As in SPM would be a moment worth celebrating.
But for one Malaysian student, getting 9As eventually led to a painful decision as he gave up his dream of studying dentistry to follow his parents’ wishes instead.
The student shared that he had always wanted to become a dentist and had even secured a scholarship to pursue dentistry after achieving excellent results in SPM.
According to mStar, he eventually rejected the opportunity and chose to enter the Institute of Teacher Education, better known as IPG, after his parents reportedly wanted him to become a teacher.
‘I have no motivation to continue studying’
With only a few days left before entering IPG, the student admitted that he was struggling to feel excited about the next chapter of his life.
“In just a few days, I’ll be entering IPG, but I have absolutely no motivation to continue studying. I’m really sad.
“My parents forced me to enter IPG even though becoming a teacher was never my dream,” he wrote.
According to him, dentistry had been his goal for a long time.
After scoring 9As in SPM, he was initially overjoyed as his results meant that he qualified to apply for the course he had always wanted.
He later managed to secure a scholarship to study dentistry, bringing him even closer to becoming a dentist.
I feel really trapped. I scored 9As in SPM. At first, I was extremely happy because I got straight As and met the requirements to apply for dentistry,” he said.
Felt like his hard work was wasted
Despite getting the results and opportunity he had worked towards, the student said he did not receive the support he hoped for from those around him.
“But when the people around me did not support me in pursuing the field I wanted, it felt like all the effort I had put in all these years was for nothing,” he said.
He claimed that his parents were unhappy with the idea of him choosing dentistry over IPG.
This left him feeling guilty about pursuing his own ambitions as he feared going against his parents’ wishes.
“I started feeling guilty and became afraid that my parents would not give their blessing to my decision.
So I rejected dentistry because I didn’t want my parents to be disappointed in me,” he said.
Teachers questioned why he rejected the scholarship
The decision became even harder for him when he recently returned to his school to collect his SPM certificate.
According to the student, several of his former teachers questioned why he had not taken up the dentistry scholarship.
“A few days ago, I went back to school to collect my SPM certificate, and many of my teachers asked why I didn’t take up the scholarship.
“I felt really sorry for myself for having to go through this,” he said.
For now, the student said he is still trying to come to terms with what has happened.
Despite having to let go of the path he originally wanted, he hopes to find the strength to move forward with the choice he has made.
