M’sian Student Complains To Her Dad That RM800 Monthly Allowance Isn’t Enough, Gets Told To Stop Acting Rich

She later said she wished she did not have a father at all.
University life can be expensive, especially when students have to juggle meals, transport, study materials and other daily necessities.

However, one Malaysian student’s request for extra food money sparked a heated debate after netizens discovered that the student was already receiving RM800 a month.

Asked father for extra money to buy food

In a screenshot shared on Threads, the student was seen messaging their father early in the morning.

“Dad, I need a little money for food,” the student wrote.

Instead of immediately transferring the money, the father questioned how the student had spent the existing allowance.

“What did you do with the RM800 a month? It’s still not enough?” he replied.

He then advised the student not to “act like a rich person” and to spend more carefully.

The original poster appeared upset by the father’s response, claiming that not all university expenses were covered and that students still had personal items to purchase.

“If it’s like this, it’s better not to have a father,” the poster wrote.

Netizens say the remark went too far

The statement did not sit well with many netizens, who felt it was excessive and disrespectful.

One Threads user said the student might regret making such a remark one day.

Saying ‘it’s better not to have a father’ is too much. One day, when your father is no longer around, you will regret it,” the user wrote.

The user added that they previously received only RM400 a month and rarely asked for extra money unless there was an urgent expense.

In a separate reply, the same user revealed that their own father had passed away, making it upsetting to see someone seemingly taking their parent for granted.

When we no longer have a father, it is sad to see posts like this. There is no appreciation at all,” they said.

Others share how they survived on less

Several netizens also argued that RM800 was already a considerable monthly allowance for a university student.

One commenter claimed that RM800 could last up to two months with proper budgeting, while they had previously survived on RM200 a month.

Another said they received RM600 from their mother but spent only RM300, saving the remaining amount by eating simple meals such as bread, instant noodles and rice.

The Threads user who criticised the original post agreed, saying they also saved money by buying larger portions of rice and side dishes that could be divided between lunch and dinner.

However, the screenshots did not reveal the student’s full monthly expenses or whether the RM800 also had to cover rent, transport, study materials and other commitments.

At the time the screenshot was taken, the Threads post had received over 46,000 views and hundreds of reactions.
