Out of all the relationships known to humankind, the one between in-laws is the hardest to navigate through, with mother-in-laws often being the toughest to deal with.
A woman recently shared on Threads a brief but tense conversation with her mother-in-law after the latter complained about not getting a birthday gift from her.
‘Because of me, you’re still alive!’
In the said post, the woman wrote that she got a phone call from her mother-in-law who was currently undergoing dialysis.

The elderly woman then said:
“It’s my birthday. Your eldest sister-in-law gave me flowers, your second sister-in-law gave me a prayer garment (telekung), your younger sibling treated me to a meal, and even my friends at the dialysis centre gave me gifts. You’re the only one who hasn’t given me anything yet.”
In the spur of the moment, the woman gave this reply in what she described as a moment where “her mouth moved faster than her brain”:
I’m paying for your dialysis treatment. Alhamdulillah, you’re still alive today.”

When the woman’s mother-in-law heard her reply, she abrupted hung up without saying thank you.
The woman added that after the call, she didn’t feel like getting anything for her mother-in-law’s birthday, saying the latter would compare her gift with someone’s else and calling it “cheap”.
Reactions
Netizens were fully on the woman’s side and ticked her mother-in-law for being so demanding.
One reminded other mother-in-laws that their daughter-in-laws owe them nothing and bluntly said no one can bring gifts with them to their grave.

Another said being rude is sometimes the only solution when dealing with people like the woman’s mother-in-law.
