We have been taught to always help others in need without asking for repayment, but sometimes it really grinds one’s gears when the beneficiary doesn’t seem to know that it’s a favor and chooses to feign ignorance.
An anonymous Malaysian recently ranted about how one of his senior colleagues expressed reluctance in paying him back the money he had spent to help him buy lunch and instead got a rude response.
Helped colleague buy lunch
In the post shared on the Facebook page Ricebowl铁饭网-解决您的求职难题, the netizen wrote that the senior colleague didn’t join the rest for lunch as he was very busy with his work.
The senior colleague then asked him to help him buy lunch, which he did by buying a packet of rice which cost RM13.
“When I came back to the office, I didn’t ask for the money straightaway as I saw that he was busy and thought he would take the initiative in doing so,” he wrote.

Two days later, the netizen still didn’t get the RM13 from his colleague, leading him to believe that the latter might have forgotten about it.
When he reminded the colleague about the money, this was the response he got:
Har? It’s only RM13. Can’t you just make it as a treat instead? Are you that poor?
Needless to say, the reply left the netizen fuming and speechless at the same time. Fortunately, his manager who happened to be at the scene admonished the senior colleague by saying, “Are you crazy? Even if he had money, why should he treat you? Return him the money!”
Finally, the senior colleague repaid the netizen his money via Touch n’ Go, albeit in a grudging manner.
The unpleasant encounter has since taught the netizen a huge lesson, who had a few choice words for his colleague:
Even if it’s just RM1, I’d consider it to be too much for you. You know who you are!
Netizens sympathise
In the comment section, netizens were as infuriated by the OP’s story and gave their thoughts over the matter.
‘Those who still want to owe RM13 are the poorer ones!’
‘If it were me, I’d say out loud in front of the whole group that the senior colleague didn’t pay me back the money and make him pay for everyone’s lunch there and then. Will make sure it’s expensive too.’
Others also advised the OP to treasure his manager for standing up for him even though he didn’t have the obligation to do so.
