M’sian Religious Leader Says Non-Halal Food Shouldn’t Be Under Menu Rahmah, Sparks Controversy Online

She said because the word 'Rahmah' comes from the verses of the Quran.

The Malaysian government’s new meal programme, Menu Rahmah, provides affordable lunch or dinner meals to help the hardcore poor. The initiative has been well-received by the public as a timely effort, especially given the current rise in living costs. However, some folks are feeling salty that non-halal eateries are included in the initiative.

According to the Women’s Leader of Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (ISMA), Shazamawati Zam Hashari, it is because the word ‘Rahmah’ comes from the verses of the Quran and the food does not conform to the characteristics of Islam itself.

However, many Malaysians have clapped back, arguing that Menu Rahmah should be for everyone, regardless of their religion.

They also pointed out that “Rahmah” comes from the Arabic language, and not all Arabs are Muslim.

Many have pushed back, arguing that the programme should be accessible to all Malaysians regardless of their religious beliefs.

One commented: “Ask God why He provides sustenance and makes life easy for all human beings, regardless of their religion or ethnicity. What’s your problem?”

Another user wrote, “Bahasa Malaysia is for all. This is horrible and disgusting behaviour from PN.
