M’sian Refuses To Lend Car To Relative For Long Trip, Gets Scolded For Saying No

The owner claimed the relative became angry and started bringing up things they had previously done for him.
Lending your car to someone can be a pretty big ask, especially when you already have concerns about its condition.

One Malaysian recently turned to Threads after a disagreement with a relative over exactly that.

According to the post, the person’s car had clocked over 9,000km and was due for servicing at 10,000km.

He also noticed that the steering had become slightly heavier than usual, which made him uncomfortable with the idea of the car being driven on a long-distance journey.

Relative wanted to borrow car for a long trip

The person said a relative from their mother’s side had asked to borrow the car to travel somewhere far away.

Before doing so, the relative asked whether the car had already been serviced.

The owner replied that it had not and explained that the steering felt heavier, adding that he were worried about taking the vehicle on a long journey.

However, things apparently became tense around 30 minutes later.

According to the owner, the relative approached him and appeared unhappy with the answer he had given.

The owner also mentioned that he already had plans to use the car with a friend, although that trip would only be within the same area and would not involve travelling far.

Relative allegedly brought up past favours

The disagreement then escalated.

The owner claimed the relative became angry and started bringing up things they had previously done for him.

The relative also allegedly said the owner’s reason for not lending the car had hurt his feelings before continuing the argument over WhatsApp.

Feeling frustrated by the situation, the owner admitted that he eventually blue-ticked the messages without replying.

He later apologised for hurting the relative’s feelings.

The owner then asked other netizens whether refusing to lend out their own car made them disrespectful towards a family member.

Many commenters sided with the car owner and said the decision should ultimately be theirs.

Another commenter similarly said that as long as the vehicle belonged to the owner and they had done nothing wrong, they should not feel pressured by what others said.

Some also pointed out that lending out a car comes with its own risks, especially when the owner already has concerns about its condition.
