M’sian Petrol Station Worker Accidentally Tops Up RM2,000 On Customer’s Diesel Card Instead Of RM200, Fears Losing Entire Salary

Can employers really deduct 100% of a worker’s salary?
A Malaysian petrol station worker has taken to social media in distress after realising she accidentally topped up RM2,000 worth of diesel into a customer’s subsidised fuel card instead of RM200.

The mistake, she said, may cost her an entire month’s salary.

“I swear I didn’t realise…”

In her post, she wrote:

Can you guys help me? I swear I didn’t realise I topped up the customer’s fuel card RM2,000 when he only wanted RM200. Then my salary kena tolak so I have no salary this month. I’m shaking. I really didn’t notice and don’t remember at all. Ya Allah.”

She clarified that the card involved was a subsidised diesel fuel card.

The young worker expressed panic and fear over the situation, saying she genuinely did not realise the amount keyed in was wrong at the time of transaction.

Customer has come back, but outcome still uncertain

According to her replies in the comment section, the card owner has already returned to the station.

However, she said she is unsure whether the owner or the company will agree to repay the excess amount.

“The owner already came but I don’t know whether he wants to pay or not,” she wrote.

In a later update, she admitted she is worried about the worst case scenario.

“I keep thinking, what if the owner doesn’t want to pay? Then I have to slowly collect money to pay it back. Allah, it feels so suffocating.”

Netizens say employer cannot deduct full salary

The post quickly gained traction, with many netizens offering advice and reassurance.

Several pointed out that employers are not allowed to deduct 100 percent of an employee’s salary, even if a mistake was made.

“One mistake is a life lesson. But the employer cannot deduct your full salary. That is wrong and can be reported,” one commenter wrote.

Another shared their own experience of filing a complaint at the Labour Office over a similar issue involving salary deductions due to stock shortages.

Others encouraged her to discuss a repayment arrangement instead of losing her entire salary at once.

“Talk to your company or manager. Maybe pay RM500 for four months. At least you still have some salary to survive,” a netizen suggested.

Some share similar experiences

A few users also shared that they had once been in similar situations.

One commenter recalled accidentally being charged a full tank instead of RM30 and later paying the difference out of sympathy for the worker, fearing their salary would be deducted.

Meanwhile, others suggested contacting the fuel company’s customer service to see if the transaction could be voided or reversed.

“You can take the card number and call customer service. Maybe there is a way to cancel,” one wrote.

The worker replied that the card is currently with her and she is waiting for the customer’s boss to arrive to discuss the matter.

While the final outcome remains unclear, many netizens described the incident as a painful but valuable lesson.

At the same time, they stressed that employers must follow proper labour laws and not impose unreasonable penalties on staff.

For now, the worker can only hope that the customer or the company will agree to repay the RM1,800 difference, sparing her from having to shoulder the burden alone.
