Recently, a newlywed couple in Malaysia has caught the attention of social media users for their budget-friendly nuptials which cost less RM1,000.

Married on a budget

On March 4, Twitter user @wydsetan, whose real name is Nur Ashiekin Johari Hamki, shared some photos from her wedding.

The 25-year-old bride shared in a follow-up tweet about how she and her husband Ahmad Farith Zulkefli managed to have the happiest day of their life with a tight budget.

On March 3, the couple got married at the Central Melaka District Religious Office and opted to take all their wedding photos there as a wedding dais was already present in the building.

To save money, the bride wore clothes she already owned and the groom’s family cooked all the meals which consisted of simple fare – white rice and asam pedas dishes for the wedding guests.

Nur Ashiekin did her own makeup and had a friend take photos using a mobile phone instead of hiring a photographer.

When asked about what they spent their money on, she shared that they only spent RM380 on their marriage registration, dowry, imam, and witness fees.

They also spent a mere RM200 on food and RM55 on the bride’s beautiful henna design. On top of that, they bought clothes that they could wear for a long time.

‘It’s just one day’

Speaking to mStar, Nur Ashiekin explained that she did not need an extravagant banquet or elaborate details to have a meaningful wedding.

She added that she and her husband both agreed on having a simple ceremony to save money for the future.

At the end of the day, what matters the most is mine and my partner’s life. Our wedding was just right for us, there was no need to be plunged into debt or show off to others just for one day.

As Muslims themselves, the couple could not skip out on customary practices but narrowed the ceremony down to the bare minimum, which they received consent from their parents to do so.

“Both of our families’ blessings were very important to us. We had to explain and talk to them many times about what was necessary and unnecessary on our wedding day,” she recalled.

Nur Ashiekin hopes her story would inspire other brides-to-be not to become entangled in debt for the sake of a grand ceremony.

It is crucial to prioritise what is necessary and important and to avoid becoming financially burdened by the wedding!
