M’sian Netizens Call Out Scammers For Allegedly Faking Cancer To Sell The Weeknd Concert Tickets

Same ticket details, same excuse.
A Malaysian Threads user recently called out several accounts that were allegedly trying to resell tickets to The Weeknd’s upcoming Kuala Lumpur concert using the same excuse.

They claimed that their “cancer got worse” and that they could no longer attend the concert.

“Why are so many Abel fans getting cancer?”

In a Threads post that has since gained attention, user an0therdes shared screenshots of multiple accounts selling tickets to The Weeknd’s KL show.

For context, The Weeknd’s real name is Abel Tesfaye.

The posts looked almost identical.

Each seller claimed to be selling two tickets for Section 106 at RM625, followed by the same line:

“My cancer got worse I can’t go out.”

They also added phrases like “first come, first served”, “DM if need”, and “serious buyers only”.

Seeing how similar the posts were, the Threads user jokingly asked why there were suddenly so many Abel fans with cancer.

Same ticket details, same excuse

The screenshots showed several different accounts using almost the same wording and ticket details.

This immediately raised suspicion among users, who pointed out that the posts looked like they were copied and pasted.

Some also said the “proof” posted by the sellers did not look convincing.

One user pointed out that the ticket shown in the screenshot appeared to mention the wrong date and ticketing platform, adding that Malaysia’s ticket sales for the concert are handled through other platforms.

Some people still believed it

Despite the red flags, the comment section showed that some people still took the posts seriously.

In one screenshot, a user commented that they were interested in buying the tickets.

The alleged seller then replied and asked them to send a direct message.

This sparked more concern among netizens, who said scammers often use emotional excuses to make buyers act quickly without checking properly.

Netizens upset over use of cancer as excuse

Several users also criticised the alleged scammers for using cancer as a fake sob story.

One commenter said cancer is not an “aesthetic” or a marketing angle, adding that such scams could make the public less trusting towards real patients who are genuinely raising funds for treatment.

Others said the excuse was too suspicious, especially since multiple accounts were using almost the same story.

Some also joked darkly about how quickly the sellers’ condition had supposedly worsened after buying the tickets.

Reminder to buy from official channels

The incident has since become a reminder for Malaysians to be extra careful when buying concert tickets from strangers online.

This is especially true for high demand concerts, where scammers may take advantage of desperate fans by using fake receipts, copied seating maps, and emotional backstories.

As one Threads user advised, fans should avoid buying from random accounts and stick to official websites or verified resale channels where possible.
