M’sian Netizen Upset By Relatives Who Ate His CNY Snacks But Refused To Share Theirs When He Visits Them

That one relative.

In the spirit of the Lunar New Year, visiting relatives is a cherished tradition, but for one netizen, this year’s experience was more of a test of hospitality than a festive gathering.

Sharing his plight on Facebook, the man humorously dubbed his relatives the “Dinosaur Family,” who made themselves at home for what seemed like an eternity.

They not only engaged in hours-long chit-chat but also seemed to have mistaken his house for a free-for-all buffet, munching away on cashews, pistachios, and bak kwa (pork jerky), while washing it down with over a dozen cans of shandy, according to Oriental Daily.

The twist came when, after hosting an Open House for two days straight, he looked forward to indulging at other friends’ gatherings.

However, to his dismay, he found the hosts guarded their snacks like treasures, offering just a few cookies and some rose syrup instead of the lavish spreads he had provided.

Netizens weighed in, with some advising him to embrace the spirit of giving during the festive season, suggesting that if he didn’t want to host a feast, perhaps celebrating away from home might be a better option.

Comments ranged from playful jabs about slow red packet distribution to reminders that the essence of the New Year is joy and generosity.

Yet, a few sympathized, sharing tales of guests who overstayed, turning the cultural celebration into an endurance test of hospitality.

As the dust settles on this festive saga, one can’t help but ponder: Where do we draw the line between hospitality and self-preservation during the Lunar New Year?
