M’sian Man Steals Phone, Car Crashes And Burns While Trying To Flee From The Scene

He had 12 criminal records.

A man with 12 criminal records was apprehended by the public after his car crashed into a divider and caught fire in an incident in Kampung Padang Pohon Tanjong yesterday (25 Apr).

In the incident at 8 pm, the suspect, who was driving a Proton Saga, fled after stealing a mobile phone from a grocery store in Kampung Pasir Pekan Tengah and was chased by the public.

According to Harian Metro, Tumpat District Deputy Police Chief, Superintendent Tan Seng Lee, said the 36-year-old suspect went to the premise with his friend, claiming to buy ice cream.

“When the grocery store owner took the ice cream as requested, the suspect reached for the mobile phone on the counter, immediately got into his car, and fled.”

“The public around tried to chase him until the car he was driving crashed into a wall and caught fire.”

“The suspect, trapped in the driver’s seat, was rescued and arrested while his friend fled, and the fire department extinguished the burning vehicle,” he said.

Tan said examining the suspect’s body found several horse pills and urine filters that tested positive for methamphetamine.

According to him, investigations also found that the suspect had 12 previous records involving drug, theft, burglary, and robbery cases. The suspect was also wanted for robbery under Section 392 of the Penal Code.

“The suspect will be remanded for four days until 28 April for investigation under Section 380 of the Penal Code, Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“We also ask the public for help if they have any information related to the suspect’s friend, who is still at large and known as ‘Amir Kutan’, to contact the nearest police station or investigating officer, Sergeant Mohd Hasnizan Ismail at 01131671373,” he said.
