Stealing, no matter the circumstance, is never the right thing to do as it involves taking something that doesn’t belong to you and causes financial loss for the victim.
A local man was recently thrown into jail after he admitted to robbing a Japanese woman of her belongings and using her ATM card to buy curry spices earlier this month.

According to NST, the accused was 35-year-old C.Selvam, who worked as a scrap metal worker.
Based on the charge sheet, Selvam, along with another accomplice who is still at large, had robbed Kayoko Shimada of her bag which contained a passport, a HSBC ATM card, a handphone and RM100.
The offense was committed the offence at the five-foot way of Lorong Pudu 14, Bukit Bintang at about 7.10am on March 4.Â
After the robbery, Selvam then used the victim’s ATM card to buy four packets of curry spices for his family.
Expressed remorse
In mitigation, Selvam’s lawyer, Kalwant Singh told the court that his client was deeply regretful and promised not to commit the crime again.
“This is my client’s first offence and he is also the breadwinner of his family,” he told Sessions Court judge Norina Zainol Abidin.
Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Muhairi Mohamed Noh asked the court to hand out a fitting sentence as well as take into consideration that Selvam had used the victim’s ATM card.
Judge Norina then sentenced Selvam to six years in jail and one cane stroke after he pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term up to 20 years and whipping.
She also ordered him to serve his sentence from the date of his arrest on March 13.Â
