Wagyu beef is considered to be one of the expensive types of beef ever known to man due to its high quality and the type of feed being used to rear the cows that produce this highly priced meat.
For one man, his desire to snag some wagyu beef for himself (albeit the wrong way) landed him in big trouble with the law, where he was given a three-month jail sentence as a result.
48yo M’sian man jailed 3 months for stealing Wagyu beef
Harian Metro reported that the accused, 48-year-old Chong Kin Young, was charged with stealing Wagyu beef and several Japanese products worth RM189.90 yesterday (Dec 25).
Aside from the Wagyu beef, he was found to have stolen one beef sausage, pickled jellyfish, cockle filling, maruchan sauce, and two alcoholic beverages owned by Pan Pacific Retail Management Sdn Bhd in a building used as a storage place in the Lot 10 shopping center at 4pm.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nadia Eleena Jamaluddin Akbal requested an appropriate sentence to be imposed, taking into account Chong’s criminal record.
However, his lawyer Simret Bedh Singh Sharma from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) asked for a lenient sentence, adding that Chong was unemployed, has a 21-year-old child, and that it was his first offense.
Chong was later charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years and a fine, along with a whipping for the second and subsequent offenses.
He was also ordered by the court to serve his three-month jail sentence starting from the date of his arrest.
