First dates are usually an opportunity for two parties to build bonds and to see whether they’re compatible to become future romantic partners.
While there’s no clear rule on who should pick the bill during the first date, the male counterpart would usually do so.
However, one man was left scratching his head after the other party insisted on footing the bill and later came to realise the ‘hidden’ message behind it.

Paid the bill before vanishing for good
Taking to Threads to share his experience, the OP named Hafizi wrote that he read somewhere that if a woman pays the bill during the first date, it’s a telltale sign that she ins’t interested in pursuing a relationship.
He added that as soon as he came across that statement, he was instantly reminded of a date that he had last year.
She (the date) kept on insisting on footing the bill. And as soon as she did that, I never saw her again from that day on.

“Since then, I haven’t seen anyone this year and I don’t know if I’ll ever meet anyone next year,” he joked.
What netizens think
In the comment section, netizens left their thoughts on what other messages were sent whenever a woman “fights” her way to pay the bill on the first date.
One said that it could be a “litmus test” to see how sincere the guy is when it comes to forming a romantic relationship.

Another opined that the woman simply didn’t want the thought of owing someone a favour to constantly hover over her mind.

Meanwhile, a netizen told the OP to see the rejection in a positive light, writing: ‘If you think long-term, every month there’ll be a first date, and every month you’ll get treated (to a meal). You can try different cafés too.’
