Whenever we hear news of Singaporean-registered vehicles pumping RON95 in Malaysia, our first reaction would be one of indignation and outrage as it’s against the law.
A local man who confronted a driver whom he thought was flouting the law was left red-faced after he was schooled over his knowledge (or lack thereof) of car plates from Sabah and Singapore.
Confronts driver, gets told it’s a Sabah car plate
In a 32-second clip uploaded by @oppa_6972 back on Mar 16, it showed the man, who was also filming the incident, approaching the driver of a car bearing the letters ‘SMC’ on its number plate pumping petrol.
He then gestured to a staff of the petrol station to come over and when the latter arrived, the man told him that the driver was breaking the law by pumping RON95 into his Singapore-registered car.
In response, the driver retorted by telling the man that his car was registered in Sandakan, Sabah, and not Singapore.
Seemingly embarrassed by the driver’s answer, the man walked away in a hurry, perhaps to prevent himself from suffering further public humiliation.
However, he didn’t offer an apology to the driver he falsely accused of pumping RON95 illegally.
‘Next level embarrassment’
The clip has garnered a total of 3 million views since it was first posted, where it attracted thousands of comments from netizens.
Many were amused by the man’s inability to differentiate between car plates from Sabah and Singapore.
‘Second hand embarrassment at maximum level.’
‘Alamak (he got) destroyed.’
Some pointed out that there were several distinct characteristics of Singaporean car plates, such as having a slightly bigger size and having letters at the beginning and end of the number plate.
In Sabah, car plates registered in the state are categorised as follows, according to FMT:
- SA – West Coast
- SY – West Coast
- SB – Beaufort
- SD – Lahad Datu
- SG – Sabah Government
- SK – Kudat
- SL – Labuan (now replaced by L)
- SS – Sandakan
- SM – Sandakan
- ST – Tawau
- SW – Tawau
- SU – Keningau
