OKU parking lots are meant to be specially reserved for the disabled as it is designed to help them get to where they want to go more easily and without having to walk long distances.
However, there are able-bodied drivers who blatantly misuse OKU parking lots and even get defensive over it, as shown in a recent social experiment conducted by IOI City Mall in Puchong.
Met with hostility when confronting driver who misused OKU parking lot
In a 2-minute long TikTok video posted by IOI City Mall, it began with local content creator Zachary Chiah explaining the purpose of the clip, which was a social experiment to see whether any non-disabled drivers would park at the OKU parking lots on a busy Sunday.
He also added that the video comes as there were many complaints from disabled drivers who said their designated parking lots were taken by those who weren’t disabled.
As the camera rolled for 90 minutes, a majority of the shoppers were seen obeying the rules, save for one woman who parked her car at the OKU lot before going on her way with a baby stroller.
Not long after, a grey Proton Iris pulled up and slotted right into the OKU parking lot, where a young couple is seen emerging from the car and heading straight for the entrance.
Without wasting time, Zachary quickly ran up to the couple and politely told them not to park their car at the OKU lot. However, the latter replied by saying that they won’t take long.
Despite his plea falling on deaf ears, Zachary persisted and tried reasoning with the couple. Instead, the man got agitated and retorted aggressively, “Do you work here? If no, are you an OKU (disabled person)?
If you don’t work here and aren’t disabled, relax and don’t kacau (bother) me. I need to be quick.
It eventually turned out that the man wasn’t “quick” with his errand as he and his partner only returned to the car 40 minutes later with several shopping bags in their hands before driving off.
Couple condemned for their selfishness
The clip later found its way to X (formerly Twitter), where the couple’s actions were met with widespread criticism from netizens.
‘Share the number plate and their faces. Also, please give them free condoms for the rest of their lives so that they don’t reproduce anymore.’
‘Should just report to the management…let them clamp the car. And enforcement needs to be more stern. Let these s*hai learn their lesson the hardest way.’
‘Punish him by making him move around on a wheelchair for an hour at the mall, then only he’ll know (his lesson).’
