M’sian Man Calls Off Wedding After Future In Laws Raise Cash Dowry From RM15K To RM25K At Last Minute

She got promoted to senior clerk, then her family allegedly raised the cash dowry to RM25K.
Wedding preparations can already be stressful enough, but one Malaysian man allegedly had to cancel his wedding entirely after his future in laws suddenly increased the agreed cash dowry by RM10,000.

According to a Threads post shared by user @tengku_teo, the incident involved his relative, whose wedding was reportedly scheduled to take place the following month.

Initially agreed on RM15,000

The poster claimed that both sides had initially agreed on a cash dowry of RM15,000.

However, things allegedly changed after the bride recently received a promotion to a senior clerk position.

Just weeks later, the bride’s mother reportedly asked for the amount to be increased from RM15,000 to RM25,000.

The groom allegedly told her that he could not afford the additional RM10,000 as much of his money had already gone towards deposits for the wedding hall and catering.

According to the poster, the bride’s mother then allegedly responded that if he could not afford it, he did not have to marry her daughter.

If you can’t afford it, then you don’t have to marry my daughter. We can find another man who has more money,” the poster recalled her allegedly saying.

Following the dispute, the wedding was reportedly called off.

Groom allegedly paid for all wedding expenses

In the comments, the poster further claimed that his relative had been covering all of the wedding expenses.

He alleged that the bride’s side did not want to contribute financially towards the preparations.

When netizens questioned the bride’s income following her promotion, the poster claimed that she works in the government sector and earns around RM2,000 to RM3,000 a month.

He also said that the bride holds a degree, while his relative has a master’s qualification.

Family allegedly wanted to show daughter married a wealthy man

Responding to another commenter who questioned the RM25,000 demand, the poster claimed that the bride’s parents wanted others to think their daughter was marrying someone wealthy.

However, he said the situation ultimately backfired and resulted in the wedding being cancelled instead.

The post has since attracted around 70,000 views, with many netizens criticising the alleged last minute change.

Some felt the groom should seek compensation for expenses already spent on the wedding, while others said he may have avoided further problems by ending the relationship before getting married.

At the time of writing, the bride and her family have not publicly responded to the claims, and WeirdKaya was unable to independently verify the allegations.
