For many people, payday is the one day of the month when their bank account finally gets some breathing room.
But for one Malaysian employee, his RM2,450 salary reportedly disappeared within just a few hours, leaving him with only RM1.20.
The story was shared on Threads by user @ashr.rim, who claimed that one of his employees broke down crying in the office pantry after discovering the missing money.
RM2,450 salary came in at 8am, almost gone by lunchtime
According to the Threads user, the employee received his RM2,450 salary at around 8am that morning.
However, when he checked his banking app before lunch at around 12pm, he was shocked to find just RM1.20 remaining in his account.
Even stranger, the transaction notification reportedly showed that the money had been withdrawn from an ATM.
The employee was confused as his debit card had apparently been inside his wallet the entire time.
Suspecting that something was not right, the Threads user asked him when he had last physically used the card and who knew his PIN.
The employee said he last used the physical card about a month earlier when he returned to his hometown.
He also admitted that his family knew his PIN as he had previously asked them to help withdraw money for him.
Card inside his wallet was actually an expired one
The Threads user then asked the employee to take out his debit card and check its details.
That was when they allegedly discovered something unexpected.
While the card was from the same bank, it was reportedly not the employee’s actual debit card.
Instead, the Threads user claimed it was his mother’s old expired card.
This led them to suspect that his actual card had been secretly swapped when he returned to his hometown.
The employee then contacted his mother to ask about the missing money.
According to the post, she initially told him to accept what happened and treat the money as though it had been given away.
However, the Threads user remained suspicious.
Threat of police report allegedly led to confession
He then suggested that the employee tell his mother they were on their way to make a police report and would ask the bank for CCTV footage from the ATM.
According to the Threads user, that was when the mother allegedly panicked and admitted that she had taken the card.
She then reportedly claimed that the employee’s younger sibling was the one who helped withdraw the money.
The Threads user further alleged that the mother became angry after being confronted, accusing her son of being ungrateful and calculative towards his own family.
This reportedly frustrated him even more as the employee had apparently been giving his family money every month.
He also believed the card swap may have been planned in advance, as an expired card was allegedly placed inside the employee’s wallet to replace the active one.
Netizens call out the alleged behaviour
The story sparked outrage among Threads users, with some describing what happened as financial abuse.
Others said parents should not treat their children as a source of unlimited money simply because they raised them.
Several commenters also sympathised with the employee, pointing out that losing almost an entire month’s salary at once could put someone in an extremely difficult financial situation.
The Threads user later joked that his employee might have to survive on instant noodles and spend more time at the office for the rest of the month.
