While standing firm for justice is crucial, it’s essential to recognize that taking a stand may not always yield positive outcomes, and there can be negative effects as well.
Since the widened outcry for ceasefire, many Malaysians who are in support of that have started a boycott campaign.
Basically, they are boycotting brands specifically, food chains which are suspected to contribute their profits to Israel.
The life of a food delivery rider is hard as it is; many of them serve as the primary breadwinners for their households, working tirelessly from dawn to dusk, braving unpredictable weather to earn an honest living.
Just recently, many of these p-hailing riders have revealed to Kosmo about their misfortune during these boycott times.
They explained that there has been a 60% drop in their income since the start of the campaign.
Speaking to Kosmo, Food delivery rider, Zulkifli Alias, said that he used to earn around RM700 per week before and now he could only make around RM200 per week.
This significant income drop has undeniably impacted his livelihood. He expresses the challenges of affording monthly expenses, which can amount to as much as RM2500, particularly challenging with three children aged 3 to 11 years old.
His monthly spendings include house rent, basic kitchen necessities, babysitter for the younger kids and more.
“This has been the worst situation I have been in, since the two years working as a rider. I’m even more affected as I’m also a rider for a fast food restaurant.”
The thirst for justice overrides all, as even the well loved eateries among Malaysians are receiving the lowest customer return recently.
The support shown in boycotting though commendable, has its share of negatively on food delivery riders like this.
Now, the rider is actively looking for alternative income as well as a different job to support his family and household needs, if this situation persists.
No matter his circumstances, Zulkifli says that he doesn’t condemn the public for showing support towards the success of this boycott campaign.
He says that it’s important to have sympathy towards the crisis and he’s still able to earn some other way.
