M’sian ‘Datuk’ Allegedly Tricks Arts Board Into Investing RM100mil

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
A man who held a ‘Datuk’ title was slapped with several charges of tricking an arts board into making a hefty investment that was merely a facade.

Aside from the fake investment, he was also accused of forging the board’s documents years ago, reported NST.

According to the charge sheet, unit trust agent Ahmad Azwan Aboo Mansor was accused of tricking the National Visual Arts Development Board (LPSVN) into entering an investment agreement for the CIMB Islamic Dali Equity Theme Fund.

He did so by false representation as well as inducing the board to write a check worth RM100 million under false pretenses at the LPSVN office located at Jalan Temerloh, off Jalan Tun Razak, Wangsa Maju, on June 10, 2014.

He was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term not less than a year and not more than 10 years, caning, and a fine if convicted.

As for the forgery charge, Azwan was accused of knowingly faking a document named “CIMB Islamic Dali Equity Theme Fund Status” dated June 9, 2017, July 28, 2017, May 21, 2018, along with a Zakat payment confirmation document dated Dec 8, 2017,

It was framed under Section 471 of the Penal Code and is punishable under Section 465 of the same code, which provides for up to two years in prison, a fine or both.

Pleaded not guilty

When the charges were read out before Sessions Court judge Hamidah Mohamed Deri, Ahmad Azwan claimed trial of all of them.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Norfauzani Mohd Nordin asked the court to set bail at RM100,000 for all five charges.

However, Ahmad Azwan’s counsel, Harjinder Singh Sandhu, pleaded for a lower amount, saying that his client had gone bankrupt and is struggling to get by.

He also said Ahmad Azwan and his wife suffer from health issues, adding that his house is in the process of being auctioned off.

The court eventually set bail at RM50,000 for all charges and set Oct 21 for case mention.
