Road accidents are a grim reality of modern life, often occurring suddenly and with little warning, despite our best efforts to stay safe.
Such was the case in a recent incident that captured widespread attention in Jerteh, Terengganu.
M’sian dad and baby get hit by Perodua Axia
On June 17, around 12:41 PM, an unexpected collision unfolded, leaving bystanders and viewers shocked at the chain of events that transpired.
The incident, widely shared on social media, involved a Perodua Axia and a speeding black vehicle at a three-way junction opposite a local shop.
CCTV footage revealed the Perodua Axia cautiously waiting to turn, while the black car approached at speed along the straight road.
However, in a split-second decision, the Axia driver attempted to exit the junction, leading to a collision that had severe consequences.
The impact of the collision was severe enough to cause the black car to skid, striking a man who was holding a baby and a motorcyclist who happened to be near the shop’s entrance.
The force of the collision knocked them down, also shattering the shop’s glass door in the process.
Miraculously, the man holding the baby managed to react quickly, moving to safety as the black car reversed, narrowly avoiding another parked vehicle nearby.
Eyewitnesses and viewers of the footage were divided in their responses. Many criticised the Perodua Axia driver for what they perceived as reckless maneuvering at the junction, which directly led to the unfortunate chain of events.
Reactions from netizens
Some speculated on what could have been done differently, suggesting the man holding the baby could have sought refuge inside the shop sooner.
“Why didn’t the father run when he saw the car hit them?”
However, amidst the criticisms, there was a wave of empathy and understanding from others. Comments flooded in, highlighting the shock and disbelief one experiences in such sudden and intense situations.
Many defended the man holding the baby, noting that reactions in moments of crisis are not always immediate, and that shock can significantly impact one’s ability to respond swiftly.
Another said, “To those who think the father reacted slowly, have you ever been in such a situation? He was shocked and stunned. It can happen to anyone. It’s easy to judge when you’re not there.”
Someone else added, “Don’t blame the father. Most people freeze in shock when they witness a car crash. Our brains take time to process the danger.”
