TikTok, like any other social media platform, is generally used to post short videos with the aim of entertaining or keeping followers updated.
Surprisingly, this application served as to lead a couple with a 23-year age gap down the path called Love, ultimately culminating in marriage.
M’sian couple with 23-year age gap first met on TikTok
Speaking to Sinar Harian about the circumstances leading her to marriage last year, 50-year-old Elya Sudirman said she never expected to wed again, given the fact that her previous marriage ended in divorce.
However, that all changed when she met her future husband, 27-year-old Mohamad Aizat Aiman Halim via TikTok.
“We got to know each other for less than a year and immediately got married. My husband and I tied the knot on November 12, 2023, in Pontian, Johor,” she said.
Family expressed reservations
Despite their strong intention to marry, Elya said her family didn’t quite agree due to the significant age gap between her and Aizat.
My family, especially my brother, didn’t quite approve at first because of the 23-year age gap, so they were unsure about the marriage.
“When my husband came to meet my family and showed his sincerity by traveling from Kedah to Johor to reassure them and express his earnestness in marrying me, only then did my family accept him,” she said.
Elya also added that she received the blessing of her four children from her previous marriage to spend her life together with Aizat.
Very happy with married life
A year into the marriage, Elya said she’s currently living with her in-laws in Sik, Kedah, where she works as a homemaker while her husband works as a lorry driver.
“I’m very happy with my younger husband because we both practice mutual trust and compromise.
“In married life, honesty is important to me. If there are problems, they need to be addressed openly and not kept inside,” she added.
