In a heart-wrenching road mishap early this morning, a young couple, reportedly engaged to be married, lost their lives in a devastating collision.
The incident occurred at Kilometer 1.9 on the Penang Bridge, heading towards Perai, involving a motorcycle and a car driven by a 16-year-old.
Harian Metro reported that Assistant Commissioner Tan Cheng San, Chief of Seberang Perai Tengah Police, provided details of the tragic event.
According to his statement, the couple, a man and a woman both in their early twenties, were pronounced dead at the scene due to the severe impact of the crash.
The teenage driver of the car involved in the accident reportedly sustained minor injuries. In contrast, the lorry driver, also involved in the incident, escaped unscathed.
“Preliminary investigations found that the accident, which occurred at 2:30 AM, happened when the teenager, coming from the direction of the island towards Perai, is suspected to have hit the back of a lorry.”
This collision led to a loss of control of the car, which subsequently struck the motorcycle carrying the ill-fated couple.
The aftermath of the collision was grave, with both riders of the motorcycle suffering critical injuries that led to their immediate demise at the accident site.
The bodies of the deceased were transported to the Forensic Unit of Seberang Jaya Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
In a follow-up to the investigation, the young driver of the car was detained for a day to aid in the ongoing investigation.
The police have issued an appeal to the public, urging eyewitnesses of the dreadful incident to step forward and provide any information that could assist in the investigation.
