A man has shared a distressing experience after he was allegedly charged RM1,469 for parking at a location that uses an automatic number plate recognition system.
According to the man, the parking system initially displayed a fee of RM5 after his vehicle’s number plate was scanned automatically.
Amount changed to RM1,469
However, when he attempted to make payment, the amount suddenly soared to RM1,469.
I was stunned. Why did the parking fee suddenly become more than RM1,000 when I only parked for a few hours?

“Luckily I didn’t just tap my card. Otherwise, more than RM1,000 would’ve been gone just like that,” he added.
Worried about potential difficulties in requesting a refund if he proceeded with the payment, the man decided to reverse his car and try exiting through another lane instead.
However, the attempt was unsuccessful as the system failed to detect his vehicle’s number plate, forcing him to use the intercom to contact parking staff.
“While waiting for the staff, I reversed again and went back to the first exit. When my number plate was scanned there, the charge changed back to RM5,” he said.
Relieved, the man quickly tapped his card and exited the car park without further issues.
Following the incident, the man advised the public to always double-check the payment amount before completing any transaction, not only at parking facilities but at all payment counters.
“Don’t just tap or scan without checking. If you’re wrongly charged, getting a refund can be troublesome, especially when using a debit card.”
