What appeared to be an ordinary pop-up while opening an app allegedly led to an unexpected charge for a 70-year-old Malaysian.
The senior citizen, Mr A, claimed that RM10 was charged to his mobile account within a week for a service he did not knowingly subscribe to.
Pop-up allegedly prevented him from opening app
Speaking to WeirdKaya, Mr A said the incident began when he tried to access an app but was repeatedly blocked by a pop-up.
Unable to proceed, he said he tapped on the pop-up without realising that it may have activated a paid subscription.
A few days later, Mr A received an SMS informing him that RM5 had been charged to his mobile bill for a service called GameMediasPremium.
“I did not even know what it was,” he said.
After searching for more information online, Mr A contacted his telco to ask about the unfamiliar charge, which he claimed had already accumulated to RM10 within just one week.
According to him, the telco agreed to waive the charges as it was the first time he had encountered the issue.
Mr A also requested that all third-party carrier billing services be blocked on his mobile account to prevent similar charges in the future.
Wife allegedly charged RM2.99 monthly for over a year
The incident also prompted Mr A to check his wife’s mobile bill.
He claimed that she had been charged RM2.99 every month for more than a year without knowing what the payment was for.
However, Mr A said the telco only agreed to waive her most recent monthly charge.
He expressed frustration that such charges could allegedly be added to a person’s phone bill without them clearly understanding what they had subscribed to.
“I believe we are not the only victims,” he said, urging other mobile users, especially senior citizens, to check their bills for unfamiliar third-party charges.
