Ever wondered what it feels like to be tossed off a tower, not out of anger, but for the ultimate adrenaline rush?
A viral TikTok video has captured the sheer thrill of BASE jumping, sparking intrigue among netizens.
BASE jumping is no ordinary sport; it’s a daring leap from towering structures, combining precision, guts, and a lot of preparation.
The video, posted by TikTok user @dewadunia, features Adi Khirman, the jumper himself, taking the leap at KL Tower’s Sky Deck (Level TH05). In the clip, two jump masters cradle Adi horizontally by his hands and legs, gently swinging him back and forth before tossing him into the open air.
What sets the video apart is Adi’s calm and collected demeanour. As soon as he’s airborne, he casually flashes a peace sign, showing just how cool and collected a BASE jumper can be.
Moments later, his parachute deploys perfectly, and he lands safely on the tower’s terrace.
The caption accompanying the video, “Just like that, they threw me away. Keep living, my friend. Not everything that’s thrown away is trash,” adds a touch of humor that resonates with viewers. The clip has since garnered over 400,000 views and counting.
What it takes to be a BASE jumper
To many, BASE jumping might seem like a wild stunt, but it’s a sport built on discipline and skill. Speaking to WeirdKaya, the video’s creator, Adi Khirman, shed light on the extreme activity.
“BASE jumping comes from the acronym Building, Antenna, Span, Earth. To become a BASE jumper, you must first be a skydiver. Every BASE jumper starts as a skydiver, but not all skydivers dare to take the leap into this sport,” Adi explained.
The journey to becoming a BASE jumper isn’t for the faint-hearted. Adi emphasized that one must complete at least 100 skydives before considering BASE jumping.
It’s a long and rigorous process that ensures participants are equipped with the necessary skills and mindset.
The key to a perfect jump: Preparation
BASE jumping leaves no room for error. Unlike skydiving, where there’s a reserve parachute for emergencies, BASE jumping relies solely on the jumper’s primary parachute.
“Folding the parachute properly is the most important part. There’s no second chance, so we must ensure it opens perfectly. Before each jump, we plan our movements—whether it’s a backflip, somersault, or something else,” Adi shared.
A decade of experience
Having spent 10 years in the sport, Adi knows the risks and rewards of BASE jumping better than most.
He described the activity in the video as part of a larger event at KL Tower, which is an iconic spot for BASE jumping enthusiasts. The tower’s Sky Deck, perched high above the city, offers an unparalleled view and the perfect platform for adrenaline-filled leaps.
So, you want to try this?
For those eager to jump into the world of BASE jumping, Adi offered simple but challenging advice:
“You need to become a skydiver first. It’s a long process, but it’s worth it if you’re truly passionate. This isn’t a sport you can rush into.”
