A man narrowly escaped death when his car’s petrol tank exploded and caught fire while he was refuelling at a petrol station in Repoh earlier today.
The incident occurred around 4:10 PM as the man, in his 40s, stopped to refuel his Proton Iswara Aeroback.
Explosions happen during refuelling
According to Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia, the explosion happened during refuelling.
“The explosion occurred when the vehicle owner, a man, was refueling at one of the pumps at the petrol station.” The statement wrote.
According to the report, the victim sustained minor hand injuries from shattered glass.
“While refueling, the petrol tank suddenly exploded, causing the entire car to be engulfed in flames,” It wrote.
The fire also caused damage to the petrol station’s roof.
Mobile phone is a possible cause
According to Bulletin TV3, preliminary forensic investigations by the Perlis Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) suggest the fire originated from the left front passenger seat, possibly caused by a mobile phone reacting with petrol vapours.
Samples of a mobile phone charger and cigarettes were collected from the scene.
The fire was deemed accidental, with no criminal elements involved. The victim was taken to Tuanku Fauziah Hospital for further treatment.
