KOTA KINABALU – A man in his 30s thought he heard a kitten mewing, but was shocked to find a baby inside a dump site instead.
The incident had occurred at around 7pm in Taman Indah Permai, Sepanggar yesterday (Oct 6).
That’s no cat!
Kota Kinabalu acting police chief Supt George Rakman said the man began digging through the rubbish when he suspected the cries weren’t that of a cat’s or other animals.
He immediately alerted police when he discovered the newborn baby boy wrapped in a blue cloth with the umbilical cord still attached.
The man also claimed to not have seen anyone else at the premise when he arrived.
The baby was later handed over to the authorities for further examination.
Supt George said police had questioned residents in the area for more information but did not reach any concrete leads.
“We are still trying to find the mother or next of kin of this baby, and it would definitely be easier if the mother had given birth in a clinic or hospital,” he said when contacted by The Star today (Oct 7).
Those with further information are urged to come forward to help police locate the mother.
‘Let’s not judge’
The incident was first reported by a netizen named xxx before Borneo Sabah TV caught wind of it.
Video clips of the incident have also gone viral on the Internet.
Netizens were relieved to see that the baby was finally in good hands.
Some also opined that though the mother’s actions were wrong, she wasn’t necessarily the one to be blamed.
