A throwback photo of KFC Malaysia’s menu from the 1980s has surfaced online, causing netizens to reminisce about the good old days. What surprised us was the menu included Chinese Tea and beer.
It was shared on a Facebook page called “Meanwhile in Malaysia”.
Back in the ’80s, KFC’s menu featured some surprising items, including Chinese tea (teh cina) and beer like Carlsberg, Anchor, and Guinness Stout as options for customers.
Priced at 50 cents, a cup of Chinese tea was considered quite costly for the time.
Other drinks on the retro menu included orange iced tea (teh ais limau), fresh lime juice (limau segar), fresh milk, and orange juice. As for dessert, KFC offered banana boat ice cream and milkshakes.
The post highlighted that the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) wasn’t established until 1997, and the symbol for the Malaysian Ringgit was “$” until 1993 when it was replaced with the now-familiar “RM.”
Netizens chimed in, sharing memories of dining at KFC only on special occasions, as eating there was considered a luxury for many.
One netizen lamented the loss of the banana split, saying, “Yeah, I miss the banana split the most. I don’t know what type of banana they used back then; it doesn’t taste like the Dole or Cavendish we have these days. It’s impossible to recreate that flavor now.”
Another netizen shared how, back in the day, their father believed KFC was not halal, so they never requested to eat there.
