The newly opened Shah Alam LRT line saw a huge crowd during its first weekend, with trains and platforms reportedly packed as many Malaysians took the chance to try the new route for free.
Looks like the new LRT3 is already becoming the latest weekend “attraction” for Klang Valley folks.
After officially starting operations on June 29, the Shah Alam LRT line is offering free rides until July 31, including its feeder bus services along the route.
And during its first weekend, many Malaysians clearly did not want to miss the chance to experience the new line for themselves.
‘Packed like sardines’
A netizen took to Threads yesterday to share their experience travelling from Klang to Bandar Utama, joking that the train was so crowded it felt like being “packed like sardines.”
“Maybe because it’s Saturday and everyone is off, the whole of Klang wanted to try the Shah Alam LRT line,” the netizen wrote.
The post quickly sparked discussion online, with many other users sharing similar experiences.
Several netizens also uploaded photos and said that both the train carriages and platforms were filled with passengers.
Free rides bring in curious commuters
Many believed the huge crowd was due to the line being newly opened, along with the ongoing free ride promotion.
For some Malaysians, it was the perfect time to test out the new route without having to pay a fare.
This also made the line a popular choice for those travelling from Klang towards Bandar Utama, especially for a weekend outing.
Good sign for public transport
While some found the crowd overwhelming, others saw it as a positive sign.
One netizen said that although they expected the LRT to be crowded during the weekend, they were still happy to see more people trying public transport.
They added that this showed how important public transport is in connecting different areas and serving people from all walks of life.
The netizen also pointed out that some leaders may not fully understand the daily struggles of ordinary commuters, especially if they are used to travelling with escorts and official cars.
Easier trip to PJ Mall
With the Shah Alam LRT line now connected to Bandar Utama station, commuters can also walk to 1 Utama Shopping Centre via a covered pedestrian bridge.
This means passengers can head straight to the mall without worrying about the hot sun or rain.
For many Klang residents, the new route has now made weekend shopping and leisure trips much more convenient.
