As the monsoon period approaches, Kelantan often braces for its annual battle with flood disasters.
This year, the situation has escalated, affecting over 77,000 victims and leaving Kelantan with the highest number of cases nationwide.
However, when life gives you floods, you can turn it into… tourism?
Turning monsoon season into tourism season
The Kelantan government is exploring this unconventional idea to transform the monsoon season into an opportunity to attract visitors.
Datuk Kamarudin Md Noor, Chairman of the state’s Tourism, Culture, Arts, and Heritage Committee, recently proposed the idea, highlighting the potential of using natural challenges as a unique selling point.
According to Astro Awani, Kamarudin explained the state’s plan to boost tourism during this quieter period. “
“What we’ve planned is to suggest surfing in mid-December, along with traditional food.” he said.
The initiative aims to capitalize on the seasonal weather by organizing activities like surfing at Pantai Kemayan, which is set to debut as a trial event next month.
Supporting Local Businesses with Traditional Food
Beyond attracting tourists, the effort seeks to help flood-affected business owners. Promoting Kelantan’s rich culinary heritage during these events is expected to generate alternative income streams for local food vendors and entrepreneurs.
Hotel operators are also encouraged to participate by offering special packages, positioning the state as a destination for both adventure and cultural experiences during the monsoon season.
