Police have confirmed that the bloated body which was found in a river yesterday (Aug 3) belonged to a businessman who was reported missing on July 29.
Following the discovery, a total of three suspects were arrested to aid police investigations for murder.
Injuries found on body
In a statement by Deputy Police Chief of Johor Hoo Chuan Huat, he said the victim’s hands and feet were tied with adhesive tape, and that the body was wrapped with a fishing net.
Several injuries were also found on the victim’s waist and arms.
Hoo added the victim’s next of kin identified the victim as the missing person mentioned in a police report lodged on July 29 based on the clothing and personal belongings found on the body.
3 men arrested
A total of three local men were later arrested by a team from the Johor Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) Criminal Investigation Department and the Batu Pahat District Police Headquarters (IPD) Criminal Investigation Division in Batu Pahat.
Out of the three suspects, two had previous criminal and drug-related records. Police also seized five mobile phones belonging to the trio.
They will be remanded for seven days until Aug 10.
While the motive behind the murder is still being investigated, Hoo said police believe it was due to a debt dispute.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the death penalty or a jail term of up to 40 years if convicted.
