While some people struggle to leave their beds on polling day, one Malaysian woman travelled thousands of kilometres from Australia just to make sure her vote counted in the Negeri Sembilan state election.
Flew home just to vote
According to New Straits Times, 67-year-old Lim Qui Fah flew back from Australia specifically to cast her ballot for the Chennah state seat.
She arrived in Malaysia a day before polling day and headed to the SJK(C) Chun Yin polling centre in Titi, Jelebu, early the next morning.
Lim was reportedly the first voter to arrive, reaching the polling centre at around 7.40am, 20 minutes before it officially opened at 8am.
‘It is my responsibility’
Speaking to reporters, Lim said voting was important to the country and described it as a responsibility she could not ignore.
Despite now living in Australia, Lim said Chennah remains her hometown and she was determined to return to fulfil her civic duty.
She also revealed that she has never missed an election before, ending her message with an enthusiastic, “Malaysia Boleh.”
Chennah sees straight fight
The Chennah seat is seeing a straight fight between Pakatan Harapan candidate Anthony Loke and Barisan Nasional candidate Siow Kong Choon.
Loke, who is also the Transport Minister and DAP secretary-general, has held the state seat since 2013 and retained it in 2023 with a majority of over 2,200 votes.
The constituency is considered one of Negeri Sembilan’s more closely balanced seats, with Malay voters making up around 46% of the electorate and Chinese voters accounting for about 44%.
