In Malaysia, we have the privilege of celebrating various festive occasions that reflect the multiculturalism of the country, and one such occasion is Deepavali.
A netizen recently took to social media to express her dismay over seeing malls going all out on Halloween decorations instead of Deepavali, which will be celebrated next week.
‘Why Halloween decor instead of Deepavali?’
In a Facebook status posted by a netizen named ‘Puan Sri H’, she voiced displeasure over the fact that malls and public places across Malaysia were displaying Halloween decorations.
She added that doing so was not only “disrespectful” to Malaysians, but an erroneous representation of Malaysian culture as a whole too.
Seriously, why are malls and public places in Malaysia having Halloween decorations? Since when was Halloween our culture? Hello, it’s Deepavali season NOT Halloween. Have some respect for our fellow Malaysians.
Netizens voice agreement
The post has since gone viral, garnering close to 7,000 likes as well as numerous comments from netizens.
A majority of netizens agreed with ‘Puan Sri H”s complaint, saying that malls should put up decorations of local festivities that are celebrated in Malaysia.
‘Now is Deepavali time, put some Deepavali decor lah!’
‘Even my kid was asking me, ‘Do we celebrate Halloween?’
Meanwhile, a netizen revealed that malls in Sabah have gone a step further by starting to sell Christmas decorations.
