‘Ghost Mall’ Malakat Mall To Close Down After Just 4 Years In Operation

The mall management said that this closure comes as the mall explores new business models to adapt to current economic challenges.
Malakat Mall Cyberjaya, which opened on March 13, 2020, will cease operations on July 31, 2024, after just over four years.

In a statement, the mall management said that this closure comes as the mall explores new business models to adapt to current economic challenges.

New business model

Since its inception, Malakat Mall faced significant hurdles, including the Movement Control Order (MCO) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, just five days after opening. Despite navigating these challenges for four years, the mall will now pivot to a more sustainable business approach.

“The mall’s food and beverage (F&B) operations will be relocated to Casa DeMadani, which will be transformed into the “RumahMakan” restaurant, offering a comfortable dining experience with a diverse menu of local and international cuisine.”

“Retail operations will shift entirely online, selling a variety of products such as clothing, accessories, stationery, books, and decor at www.malakat.com. Malakat Grocer will continue to operate its store in Taman Kosas, Ampang,” Fadzil Hashim, founder of Malakat Mall said.

In conjunction with the closure, Malakat Mall will hold a closing sale offering discounts of up to 70% on assets from July 20 to July 31, 2024.

“Malakat Mall’s legacy of being Muslim-friendly and entrepreneur-friendly will persist in other suitable forms, with a focus on strengthening its online systems,” Fadzil added.

Once named as ‘Ghost Mall’

The mall gained notoriety as an “abandoned ghost mall” after a TikTok video by 24-year-old content creator Aqlan Rosli went viral.

In the video, Aqlan walked through the modern-looking mall, showcasing well-stocked shops and a food court without encountering anyone.

This phenomenon even attracted a Business Insider journalist who traveled from Singapore to experience the mall firsthand.
