As those born and bred in Malaysia, saying the names of popular and iconic cities is as easy as ABC. But for foreigners, it is a gigantic challenge in itself.
An elderly French lady has recently gone viral on TikTok after a clip of her trying to pronounce the names of Malaysian cities and towns in her deep French accent circulated on the platform.
French lady tries pronouncing M’sian city names
In the 56-second clip posted by @malay_frenchie_explorer back on Jan 7, the French lady was given a list of Malaysian city names to read out.
While she passed with flying colours for Kuala Lumpur, she had trouble pronouncing Shah Alam, where she pronounced it as ‘shadihan’.
Upon hearing a confused ‘Huh?’ from the cameraperson, the lady quickly corrected her pronunciation. She was also heard mumbling “Is it an alarm?” before moving on to the next location.
Next up was the city of Muar in Johor, where the French lady started off by pronouncing it as ‘”Mew-ar”.
At her second attempt, she opened her mouth slightly wider and said “MOOOO-ARH” with much effort in each syllable, eliciting giggles from the cameraperson.
Surprisingly, she managed to nail the pronunciation for Ipoh, Alor Setar, and Kuantan before hilariously fumbling with Kuching, where she pronounced it as ‘koo-shing’ before being corrected on it.
‘So adorable!’
The clip has since garnered more than 1.3 million views so far and thousands of comments from Malaysians who couldn’t help but chuckle over the lady’s pronunciation of city names.
‘Shah Alam but make it French.’
‘She looked like someone was feeding her when she said Muar.’
‘She’s so precious.’
Some also praised her for nailing the pronunciation in the local dialect, in particular Alor Setar.
